Gingivitis and periodontitis are serious forms of gum disease which is the leading cause of tooth loss. At Montrose Smile Studio our primary aim is to ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy and we can show you how this can be prevented.
When bacteria builds up in our mouths, a film of plaque develops on the base of our teeth, just around the gum line. This is the beginning of gum disease and if left untreated, it can lead to periodontitis and result in the loss of a tooth.
There are a number of warning signs that can help you to identify the formation or effects of gingivitis. These are swollen gums, red sensitive gums, bleeding gums (when flossing or brushing), receding gums, bad breath (halitosis) or loose teeth.
The main cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene however, it can be caused by brushing teeth with stiff bristled toothbrushes or breathing through the mouth whilst sleeping and smoking. Other factors including age, osteoporosis and genetics can also contribute to the development of gingivitis .
At Montrose Smile Studio we recommend to every patient that they book regular dental hygiene visits. At least twice a year is the minimum recommendation with a focus of removing plaque as well as thoroughly cleaning your teeth. Our dentists and hygienists will also demonstrate how you can maintain healthy teeth and gums at home. Prevention is better than cure and the most effective way to combat gingivitis is to prevent it.
If you are concerned about bad breath, bleeding gums or you notice plaque around your teeth, contact Montrose Smile Studio and book an appointment with us at your earliest convenience.
